  • Chiba 2010 Worlds might affect the December 20th B&R List

Fresh news regarding the upcoming Banned & Restricted list from December 20th coming straight from the WotC headquarters. Today Brian David-Marshall wrote on his column the following:

    10. The Survival of Legacy

The banned and restricted announcement will go up on December 20 as usual—after Worlds. If any player is going to come up with a strategy to beat the Survival of the Fittest decks that have been dominating the format then the Team Competition may be the last chance that they get to do so before it is defeated through legislation.

After this statement, it seems pretty clear that WotC is seriously conscious about the health of Legacy and specially about the power of the green enchantment. You readers think that Legacy is a healthy format (72%) but still a 28% of the people who voted said that Legacy isn’t healthy and might need a change. A 28% is a huge value when you think about it, meaning that every 4 Legacy players one thinks the format ain’t healthy.

What do you guys think about the statement?

  • In the Lab – Brainstorming Legacy Affinity

In the Lab - Brainstorming Legacy Affinity

Since the printing of Mirrodin and Darksteel enterprising mages have been brainstorming the best ways to break the Affinity mechanic. Effects that multiply anything (see: Berserk, Fork, the Storm mechanic) have traditionally been very powerful, and the DCI has treaded very carefully with those effects. The Affinity strategy proved sound enough to thoroughly dominate Standard and get all of the good cards banned in Extended, but hasn’t had the kind of strength or staying power in Legacy to keep it in Tier 1 or Tier 2 status.

  • Could Masters Edition 4 Change the Banned & Restricted Lists?

Last week, Patrick Chapin wrote on Twitter:

Library of Alexandria is not being placed on Online Classic Restricted List (when other ME4 cards are). Is this a hint as to next B/R list?

That rumor was spread world wide and actually a lot of people started to think about how Library of Alexandria would impact Legacy and Vintage online. People on seem mixed about the possibility of LOA entering the Legacy format. Patrick Chapin’s rumor was actually true, as today we’ve seen the official changes to the MTGO Banned and Restricted lists, and Library is unrestricted in MTGO Classic. When it comes to changes to the B/R lists we always hope they come for good, so we’ll see if these little online hints then in turn have any bearing on the the paper formats. So far these are the new changes to the online lists:

Classic MTGO: Fastbond, Mana Vault, Time Vault, Trinisphere and Wheel of Fortune are Restricted.

Legacy MTGO: Fastbond, Library of Alexandria, Mana Vault, Mishra’s Workshop, Time Vault and Wheel of Fortune are Banned.

(The ME4 release also affects other MTGO formats like 100 Card Singleton, Tribal, Prismatic, etc.)

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Magic Online, you should know that the Masters Editions are sets that reprint old staples for the online formats Classic (Vintage) and Legacy.  You can find the full spoiler of the cards to be released with ME4 right after the break:

  • In the Lab – Legacy Transformers

In the history of Magic: The Gathering, milling your opponent has been always a fun (but not always great) way to win the games. WotC keeps printing cards that throw cards from top of the deck to the graveyard, but generally all those cards suck. Even though we know how bad of a strategy milling is we keep trying it.

The following In the Lab article talks about my latest (monster) creation: Transformers. You can keep reading about it after the break.

  • StarCityGames Boston Legacy $5K – Top 16 Decklists

The Boston SCG Open Series Legacy  $5K tournament has come to an end with James Rynkiewicz taking home the winner tittle (and $2000). Survival of the Fittest wins for the second time in a row in yet another outstanding performance. The combination of the green enchantment with Vengevine seems to be dominating the boards and a good prove of that are those 7 out 16 decks of SCG Boston Top16 that were playing 4 Survival of the Fittest + 4 Vengevine.

It seems to us that the new Legacy trend to combat Vengevine Survival is actually playing it. Someone once said:

If you can’t beat them, join them.

That sentence is, somehow, full of win. Sad but true. The current Legacy situation deserves a full article, as there are lot of key factors that can define why Legacy is plagued with Vengevines. We’d love to know more about the following poll we are presenting:

Right after the break you can find the Top 16 decks of the StarCityGames Boston Legacy $5K.

  • Focus on Legacy – Combating Survival

    Combating Survival of the Fittest

During the recent coverage of StarCityGames Nashville Legacy $5K event SCG writer called for the banning of Survival of the Fittest. OOOOOOH GOD, a deck has taken the SCG circuit by storm! We had better take immediate corrective action and ban something! Now I think we can all recognize that Survival is a fantastic card, but is it really ban-worthy? Let’s take a look at this, and various ways to combat Survival after the jump.

  • Survival of the Fittest Should Not Be Banned, Say the Voters

According to our readers from the poll we made last week, even though Survival of the fittest is everywhere, it should not be banned in Legacy. The results from the poll (so far, as it’s still opened) are:

    • No (71%, 152 Votes)
    • Yes (29%, 61 Votes)

    Total Voters: 213

Besides SotF, do you feel like any other card should be banned or unbanned in Legacy? Wizards of the Coast “experiments” in Vintage have a tendency to allow more cards into the format. Will WotC apply the same philosophy for Legacy? Someone said once that cards like Mana Drain were banned in Legacy due to their high monetary value, but having other cards in the format like Tarbenacle at Pendrell Vale  or Grim Tutor kind of invalidate that theory.

In this week’s poll, we are asking you if you think it’s safe to unban cards like Mana Drain in Legacy:

  • Stephen Menendian Goes from SCG to Quiet Speculation

One of the few Vintage writers and also probably one of the best Eternal writers, Magic guru Stephen Menendian, and his column “So Many Insane Plays” are moving from the well known Star City Games website to the new and very interesting Quiet

The good news is that to replace Menendian’s column StarCityGames are bringing in both Brian Demars and Andy Probasco, both excellent players and well respected for their Vintage and Legacy theory and results among the Eternal Magic community (especially on TMD).

We encourage all of you to keep the track of these excellent writers at Quiet Speculation, as they promise really high-quality articles there. After the break there’s an excerpt and link to Steve’s first article on Quiet Speculation.

  • A New Take on Legacy Dredge!

Legacy is a format that is constantly in flux. Tons of decks are viable and therefore it’s very hard to attack or defend the format from one specific angle. A lot of people dislike this characteristic of Legacy (and old Extended formats), but I think it’s great.

Nowadays Vengevine Madness is slowly starting to dominate, and various decks and their sideboards are adapting to help fight the Vengevine menace, and are tailoring graveyard hate specifically for attacking this threat. This is great news for Dredge since people are now packing graveyard hate that is quite weak against Dredge. After the jump let’s take a look at the available options that are most often played.

  • Pimp My Deck – BUG Landstill, by piZZero

I’m currently loving the BUG Landstill JACO presented few months ago (Primer + SB strategies, forum discussion). Even though the deck isn’t 100% pimp’d as I’d like to (still missing 3 Foil Japanese Innocent Blood; help needed here!), I’m really happy and proud to present you my legacy deck:
