Prague Eternal 2014 Official Tournament Organizer Report

Dear players, welcome to the official tournament organizer’s report from Prague Eternal 2014! Originally, we wanted to bring you online coverage, but unfortunately, the technical capabilities of our site did not allow us to do that (no WiFi), so we at least bring you a little coverage of what had been going on during the Prague Eternal Weekend.

Friday Legacy Trial Results

The entry fee to all the scheduled tournaments was 600 Czk or 27 Euro. The whole thing started on Friday at 6PM with the Legacy Trial. There were almost 60 players participating and the field that looked like this:
UWr Miracles – 10 players
RUG Delver – 8 players
ANT- 6 players
Death and Taxes – 5 players
Jund/Life from The Loam decks – 4 players
Burn – 4 players
Others – 19 players

There was no Top 8 for this tournament due to time issues, so it was Swiss + 1. After the Swiss rounds the king of the hill was Ondřej Stráský with UWr Miracles. Congratulations!

The Legacy Main event started on Saturday at 10AM. There were 148 players participating and we thank every single one of them for their support. After 8 rounds of Swiss the Top 8 was ready to battle. In the end there were only two players standing – Tomáš Vlček (UWr Miracles) from Czech Republic and Kai Thiele (Ad Nauseam Tendrils) from Germany. It was the German who took home the Legacy Championship, glory, fame and a playset of very nice Underground Seas (the prize for the winner). Congratulations! Interested in Top 8 decklists? Check them out below!

After the Swiss and Top 8 playoffs, the final standings looked like this:

We have all witnessed a huge piece of Magic action on Saturday and when the day was done (around 10:30PM), and there was not a single person on site who was not tired. Tired but excited though, because we all knew what was about to come on Sunday.

Vintage Main Event

Bam! Here we go! It is Sunday morning and that only means one thing. It means it is time to pull out the big guns and battle like men. Very rich men, to be precise. Yes, it is time for Black Lotuses, Ancestral Recalls, and Walking in Time! It is time for Prague Eternal Vintage Tournament!

Have you ever seen your appartment battling against your car? No? I have. Just take a look – the player on the left side of the table, the one with black bordered underground seas and black bordered power nine, his deck is as expensive as my appartment. And the one on the right, the one with foil japanese Polluted Deltas, that is my car. Welcome to Vintage! I didnt have the chance to find out if my appartment was going to beat the hell out of my car or the other way around, because I was gathering a little more information for you. So here we go.

There were 48 players participating in the Vintage Main event. Julian Knab from Germany stood in the finals against Niels Thiim from Denmark. The Danish player and his horde of artifacts were victorious in the end. Congratulations!

After six rounds of Swiss and the Top 8 battle, the final standings looked like this.

Prague Eternal 2014 Sunday Modern Top 8 Decklists

For those players, who did not fancy Vintage (or just happen to love their appartment too much to trade it for a Vintage deck), there was also a Sunday Modern event. There were 37 people playing, and in the end, the victourious player was Mark Vogl from Germany, who defeated Petr Sochůrek in the Finals. Mark was playing Melira Pod and Petr put his money on Merfolk (just a figure of speech, no deals involving money between the two finalists of course). Don’t forget to check out their decklists!

The Modern finale was the last match of the day, so players had quite an audiance. Conratulations to Mark!

Interview With Zuzy

After the finale was done, the main organizer of the Event, Jan “Zuzy” Zuskač at last had some time to answer some questions.

Question: Hello Zuzy, would you like to introduce yourself to the players who do not know you?
Answer: Hi, my name is Zuzy, and I am from Příbram (a town in Czech Republic). I am 33 years old, I have a lovely wife and two beautiful children (son and a daughter). I work as a Manager of the Sales Department.

Question: When and where did you first play Magic?
Answer: It was at a summer camp in 1995.

Question: Where does your passion for Eternal formats come from?
Answer: I bought my first Power 9 eight years ago and I found out that there were no Vintage tournaments in Dzech Republic. But I really wanted to play, so I started organizing a Czech Vintage and Legacy series.

Question: When did you first start considering organizing a large Eternal event, and how did the whole proce unfold from merely a thought to the actual tournament?
Answer: It was in Nowember 2013 when I first got the idea. And I have been working on this project since February 2014. I did not stand alone though. I worked with Tomas Klimes and his shop Najáda.cz, and my media partner was a CMUS.cz. I also got a big help from Invisio via technical support, and I thank them for that.

Question: The weekend is almost over. How did it go? Are you satisfied with the results?
Answer: Really, I dont know yet. But I guess I am satisfied. Friday was very good, we could even afford to increase the prize pool. Saturday Legacy was very good too, but the Highlander on the other hand was a disapointment (only 24 players). Sunday Vintage was ok. We had 42 players, which makes it the biggest Vintage tournament ever in Czech Republic. The Modern tournaent was the biggest disapoitment, with only 35 players. We expected around 60.

Question: What are the plans for the future? Are you already planning next year?
Answer: Well I have a lot of plans into the future. I gotta take my wife to holiday, play with my children and things like that 😀 But as far as Magic is concerned I think it is going to be possible for us to organize a similar kind of tournament, and meaby even sooner than in one year.

Question: Did you play in any events yourself?
Answer: I thought I would be able to play on Friday, but because of the duties of the organizer, I could not. I did play in the Saturday legacy event, but I had dropped after going 2:1, because I really wanted to play my beloved Vintage. I played a Vintage on Sunday, but I went 3:3. It is kind of complicated for me to play, while organizing a tournament, because I have a lot on my mind, you know, the constant buzz in your head. So maybe, while thinking about it, next time, instead of organizing the whole thing, I will take my wife for a holiday to a location with good Vintage tournament around. Than I will be able to play with no worries 😀

Question: Have you ever used the fact that you are an organizer to gain an edge? Calling off judges or things like that?
Answer: I would not dare to do that, because Jara Karban, the best head judge in Czech Republic would rip my balls off for it, and there is no honor in it.

Question: Do you have a favorite deck?
Answer: No, not really. I have a plenty of cards so I try to play a different deck every tournament. Which is kind of a problem, because I don’t get to playtest with only one deck. But I play for fun and I like it this way.

Question: Besides organizer and player, you are also a collector. Which card in your collection do you value the most:
Answer: I collect Japanese Foils. So I guess my favorite cards are (all in foil and Japanese) Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Flooded Strand, and Brainstorm. But I have pretty much every card.

Question: Is there anything else you would like to say to the players?
Answer: Definitely. I would like to thank so much to everybody who attended, it wouldn’t be possible to organize such a great weekend of Magic without you- players. Thank you very much and hopefully see you soon!
