Focus on Legacy – Combating Survival

Combating Survival of the Fittest

During the recent coverage of StarCityGames Nashville Legacy $5K event SCG writer called for the banning of Survival of the Fittest. OOOOOOH GOD, a deck has taken the SCG circuit by storm! We had better take immediate corrective action and ban something! Now I think we can all recognize that Survival is a fantastic card, but is it really ban-worthy? Let’s take a look at this, and various ways to combat Survival after the jump.

2011 Grand Prix Circuit Includes 2 Legacy GP Events

The 2011 Grand Prix Schedule has been released today and the Eternal players everywhere can rejoice. With the success of the Legacy GP’s from this year (including GP Madrid’s record-breaking turnout), Wizards of the Coast has decided to keep the ball rolling with 2 more Legacy stops this coming year.

One will take place in Providence (Rhode Island, USA, May 28-29) and the other one in Amsterdam (Holland – Europe, date to be determined). We hope to see great attendances at both GP’s, so you better start testing!

After the break you’ll find the complete 2011 GP Schedule.

Star City Games – Nashville Top16 Legacy decklists

Congratulations to Jessie Butler for winning SCG – Nashville Legacy Open! Thanks to the guys from SCG we already have the decklists from the top16 players. Please notice the sick performance of decks running Survival of the Fittest.  3 out of 4 top4 players ran the enchantment, so… here it comes the compulsory question:

Should Survival of the Fittest be banned in Legacy?

Stephen Menendian Goes from SCG to Quiet Speculation

One of the few Vintage writers and also probably one of the best Eternal writers, Magic guru Stephen Menendian, and his column “So Many Insane Plays” are moving from the well known Star City Games website to the new and very interesting Quiet

The good news is that to replace Menendian’s column StarCityGames are bringing in both Brian Demars and Andy Probasco, both excellent players and well respected for their Vintage and Legacy theory and results among the Eternal Magic community (especially on TMD).

We encourage all of you to keep the track of these excellent writers at Quiet Speculation, as they promise really high-quality articles there. After the break there’s an excerpt and link to Steve’s first article on Quiet Speculation.

A New Take on Legacy Dredge!

Legacy is a format that is constantly in flux. Tons of decks are viable and therefore it’s very hard to attack or defend the format from one specific angle. A lot of people dislike this characteristic of Legacy (and old Extended formats), but I think it’s great.

Nowadays Vengevine Madness is slowly starting to dominate, and various decks and their sideboards are adapting to help fight the Vengevine menace, and are tailoring graveyard hate specifically for attacking this threat. This is great news for Dredge since people are now packing graveyard hate that is quite weak against Dredge. After the jump let’s take a look at the available options that are most often played.

Eternal Weekend 2010 (Madrid) – Legacy Coverage and News!

After the succes of yesterday’s Vintage event, today’s Legacy tournament generated a lot of expectation to see how many people would gather in Madrid. So, it’s now official: 293 players are fighting for the Legacy prices through the 9 swiss rounds + top8!

Due to a very tight schedule of some of the Top8 players, they’ve split the prizes for the whole Top8! Each Top8 player will get an average of 12.5 dual lands. Congratulations then to the 8 winners!

David López (Dark Threshold)
Sergio Matesanz
Juanmi Carrascosa (WG Survival)

Pimp My Deck – BUG Landstill, by piZZero

It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted a full deck! Leaving my combo decks behind and moving to control was a tough but wise decision. I’m currently loving the BUG Landstill JACO presented few months ago (Primer + SB strategies, forum discussion). Even though the deck isn’t 100% pimp’d as I’d like to (still missing 3 Foil Japanese Innocent Blood; help needed here!), I’m really happy and proud to present you my legacy deck:
